Coral Reef Innovation Africa Empowers Rural Students to Shine in National Robotics Competition

In a groundbreaking stride toward inclusive digital learning, students from rural schools in Kona, Wioso, and Toase are proving that talent knows no boundaries. Within just months of training, these young innovators are competing and excelling at the national level.
Last year, the Wioso D/A School Robotics Team stunned the nation by placing 5th out of 32 schools nationwide, after less than three weeks of training. This year, Kona D/A Primary School carried the torch, travelling at dawn from the Ashanti Region to Accra to face off against 64 top schools in the Ghana Robotics Competition (GRC 2025).
Against all odds, the Kona team battled their way to the quarterfinals, earning admiration and applause from spectators and judges alike. Though a late-stage motor failure ended their run, their determination — and spirit — have captured hearts across Ghana.
“For these students, robotics isn’t just about machines,” said a CRIA project coordinator. “It’s about realizing they have the power to shape their tomorrow, today.”
What began as a modest partnership project in 2023 has grown into a transformative educational revolution. The AI Labs are not just classrooms — they are launchpads of creativity, where students learn coding, robotics, and problem-solving while discovering the limitless potential of technology.
Each lab, equipped with smart technology and guided by trained facilitators, provides students with hands-on exposure to AI-driven learning — ensuring no child is left behind in the digital age.
“Every young mind we empower becomes a seed of transformation,” said the CRIA team in a statement. “With access, reformed education, and critical thinking, they don’t just imagine the future — they engineer it.”
With continued support from the Otumfuo Foundation, Newmont Africa, and other partners, Coral Reef Innovation Africa is spearheading a movement that aims to build Africa’s next generation of innovators, engineers, and leaders.
As the momentum builds, CRIA is calling on public and private partners to join the mission to Empower Tomorrow Today.
